Wellie warmers – FO 9/2010

May 16, 2010

Don’t tell Button I let her Daddy put his feet on the table.  She’d be extremely disgruntled!  Anyway…back to the socks.

You’ll recall the pattern is from The Knitting Man(ual) and the yarn is Superba Print.

All in all, I’m pleased with these socks other than they are a little loose around the foot, even though I knit them to the gauge in the pattern..  If I was making these again, and I may use the pattern with a different stitch, I’d use a size smaller needle to get a slightly tighter gauge.

That said, Mr S is pleased with them and feels they are the perfect sock for wellies and walking boots, so I’m pleased too.

Next!!!

Leftovers

April 29, 2010

When I bought the yarn for Mr Stitches’ Snowflake Jacket I bought waaaaaaaay too much of it. I can almost hear Mr S snorting “no surprise there, then!”.

So what’s a girl to do?  Ma Stitches and her lightning fast needles to the rescue, and two cute knits for Button and The Boy:

Just how cheeky is that little face????
My mop haired poppet

The Boy’s sweater is Gavyn by Amanda Blackford. Button’s is Eyelet Yoke Cardigan by Sarah Hoadley.  Both are available as free downloads on Ravelry.  Aren’t people just so generous with their talents.  Thank you to both ladies for sharing these patterns.

And there’s still enough of the grey left for another Gavyn, which shall soon be winging its way to my nephew, Jacob. Just in perfect time for the British summertime!  Today’s Spring is overcast, cold and wet.  Just right for new knits.

Thanks Ma.

Lucy in the Sky – FO 6/2010

March 28, 2010

Lucy had her first outing today, so we grabbed a quick snap before dashing off to the garden centre.

Sorry for the picture quality at the moment.  My little camera has been in the wars and it shows.  One of these days I’ll have a digital SLR, but the garden needs landscaping first!

Anyway, back to Lucy.  As you know the pattern is by cosmicpluto knits and is knitting in Phildar Oxygene in Flanelle that was in my stash.

I really like this pattern.  If I’d had a little more yarn I would have added a couple of inches to the length as I’m taller than the average bear at 5 ft 8, and I like to wear my knits a weeny bit longer.  But as it was I only just managed to eke the cardigan as it is out of the yarn that I had.

And whilst there are a bajillion other patterns I’m itching to knit, this is one that I can see myself coming back to as it’s a great basic shape.  It also lends itself to playing around with other stitch patterns…maybe a cable or two or a bit of a lacy panel.  Who knows?  I’ve got socks to finish first!

Comfy Cables scarf – FO 5/2010

March 14, 2010

Pattern:     Comfy Cables by Gina Bonomo on Ravelry

Yarn:          Teeswater Yarn from Higher Gills Farm knit two strands together

This has just been a lovely simple knit.  The yarn is soft and cosy. I’d definitely recommend both yarn and pattern.

What I’m working on now

February 28, 2010

With apologies for the fuzzy pictures…all were taken in artificial light and I don’t (yet) have an SLR camera.

First up is the blind for the hallway.

I really rather enjoy making Roman blinds.  These are an easy size to manage and even with the interlining and the trim, this is coming together rather quickly.  Hurrah. Especially as I have another one to make in the same fabric and trim for the window at the top of the stairs.

Next is the Lucy cardigan.Just a teeny bit more of the yoke and the band to do here.  It’s flying off the needles now I’m on the yoke.  And about time too as this has taken far to long.  My fault, not the pattern.  A bad attack of ennui that has now been shaken off.

And last but by no means least:The yarn is a lace-weight from Teeswater Wools in Clitheroe with two strands knit together.  It’s spun from rare breed sheep and is absolutely glorious. Whilst the photo above shows the cable pattern, Comfy Cables, free on Ravelry, it doesn’t show the colour.  This is more like it:Just lovely.  And a super easy pattern.

ooooooooooooooooh warmth!

February 5, 2010

Well, it’s been an absolute bear of a project, but finally the kitchen door curtain is finished. The hand-made pole is nothing short of wonderful.

I’m so thrilled with it.  Pete at Siddington Smithy is a craftsman and I found him a delight to do business with. Amazingly, the pole cost less than a mass-produced one would have done. It really shows that we should support independent craftsmen when we can.

So, the kitchen is all but done.  We need pictures and to do something with the dining table (paint or replace…not sure which), but neither of those are urgent.

*********************************************************************************************************

Our next project is to clear some space in the loft.  I’m planning to cull books and fabric and yarn.  Anything I can’immediately assign to a project, or which has sat there for years, is going to be either sold or gifted.  I don’t have the room and time has moved on, as have my requirements and taste.  It’s time the be ruthless.

The reason for this determined approach is that Mr Stitch is moving up into the loft to share my space with his home office space.  Hmmmmm!!!  Not sure how that will work, but if he’s naughty I have lots of sharp implements to poke him with!!

And the reason Mr Stitch is invading my space moving up to the loft, is so we can revert what is now his office back into a bedroom.

More painting, blinds and curtains, then!

**********************************************************************************************************

And finally a knitting update.  Miss Maddy is almost done.  I’m on the last sleeve.  I haven’t knitted a stitch on the Lucy cardigan at all this year, despite the lovely new needles.  Just focusing on getting projects finished one at a time.  Hopefully Miss Maddy will be done soon.

Have a great weekend.  I’ll be the one hidden under a pile of rubbish yarn/fabric/books/packing boxes.

**********************************************************************************************************

PS…as of this morning the weight tracker is accurate again.  My post Christmas/snow fever/jeepers-I-hate-this-wretched-door-curtain-so-I’m-off-to-eat-chocolate extra pounds have gone.

Miss Matty

January 8, 2010

The news is dominated by the freak weather conditions here in the UK.  Our street is packed ice and snow…even the little local bus doesn’t brave it but sticks to the main roads which are clearer thanks to gritters and use.

We don’t have to venture out of the house, so we haven’t since Sunday.  Except for Mr S who made an expedition to the supermarket for supplies.

Whilst keeping Button entertained and her decibel levels below that of Concorde has been priority (although most of Mr S’s work colleagues have commented on the capacity of her lungs at some time or other this week), I’ve still managed a little knitting and sewing on the side.

The dpns have arrived for the sleeves for the Lucy cardigan, and over the weekend I’ll pick that up again, I think.  However I’ve been mostly working on my Miss Matty jacket:It’s the New Lanark Jacket from Woolfish, available as a free pattern here.  The yarn is their New Lanark Yarn, which I purchased at Harrogate in November.

However, having watched Cranford at Christmas I can’t help but think of it as Miss Matty, as Judi Dench wore a garter stitch shawl in an almost identical colour throughout the show:I started it sometime over the Christmas holiday.  When exactly is lost in a mist of good red wine and chocolate. Suffice to say I’ve finished the back and am halfway up the first front.  After the Snowflake Jacket this is mind-soothingly simple to knit with minimal shaping to give it swing.  I can curl up in the evenings and watch a movie and knit another section. During the day I can knit a half row or so before being required to kiss dolly or put her hat on.  It’s easily left and picked back up and forgives being pulled off the needles on a regular basis by little fingers.

As the routine of afternoon naps starts to be reinstated after the excitement of Christmas, I’ve also cut out the fabric for the kitchen door curtain and have pattern-matched and seamed the first two widths together.  Two more to go…that’s another 5 meters of seaming before I get to the linings.  However I know the pole is ready at the smithy.  As soon as the delivery van can get through the snow it will be here.

Best get sewing!

More Snowflakes

December 29, 2009

We had the most magical Christmas.  Strangely every photo I took was of a certain wee small girl looking festive and happy:But I was also pleased to have a warm and cozy Mr Stitches in his finally finished Snowflake Jacket:I’ve adjusted the buttons to ensure that the pattern actually matches at the centre front! But I’ve discovered on more problem with this pattern….getting Mr S to stop wearing it!!!!!!!!!

Hats off to Button

October 28, 2009

DSCF3136_0179I LOVE this little hat.  It’s made in very cheap acrylic yarn (Silcaress from Cygnet) as that’s all the local shop had in stock and I needed to get this on her head, and quick.

The pattern is the cover design from the Sirdar Little Sweet Peas book, with just one repeat of the lace,  and is a dream to make in no time at all:

Even more stitches from Ma Stitches

October 28, 2009

Ma Stitches is back again still trying to sign for her new flat.  The gross incompetence of the housing agency is astonishing to say the least.  Hopefully by this time tomorrow we’ll finally have the keys.

The good news is that once again she has a morsel of knitting for Button in her case.  This time it’s this little beauty:DSCF3118_0161_edited-1I have absolutely no idea what the yarn is other than it’s cotton that I had in my stash.  The pattern also is a mystery. I’ve downloaded it from somewhere on the internet and can’t for the life of me find it again.  So apologies to the lovely designer…if you can help me out I’ll be thrilled to make the necessary acknowledgements.
