Knitting

August 5, 2011

This week I received a comment from Clio where she asked:

“I’m thinking about picking up knitting this Autumn – it would be nice to have a hobby I could do on the couch! Do you have any suggestions for beginner books or DVD’s or websites that might be a good             resource for a beginner who is a bit intimidated? Thanks for any suggestions!”

I couldn’t agree more with Clio.  I love crisp autumn evenings spent on the sofa with a babes asleep upstairs, husband ensconced next to me, a fire, a glass of something warming and the perfect knitting project.  It’s one of the most lovely ways to spend time. So I thought I’d share my favourite resources here with you all.

First up has to be Ravelry.  This is always my first stop for patterns as there is an enormous selection, many of which you can download for free.  And if, for example, you want to knit a ladies lace cardigan in 4 ply, then you can narrow the search parameters to find just what you’re looking for.  The advance search facility has been invaluable for me in knitting up my stash as you can also search for patterns for the 700m of aran yarn you have in your stash! Brilliant.

Ravelry also has a great community and as well as patterns you can find yarn and groups of likeminded people…either locally or globally.

AND you can track your projects and stash and share them with the world.

Whilst we’re on the topic of community…for new knitters I can’t recommend enough searching out your local knitting group.  You can search on Ravelry, at your local library, your local yarn shop or at Stitch ‘n’ Bitch.  Knitters are fabulous people and are always happy to welcome newcomers, however inexperienced.  They are also always happy to share their expertise.

So now you have a pattern and some knitting friends, obviously you need some yarn.  When I started knitting about 30 years ago the selection was limited to what your local yarn shop stocked, and my local yarn shop stocked acrylic or scratchy wool.

We’ve come a long way baby!

Now you can get yarn in everything from alpaca to steel, and a myriad of fibers inbetween.  It’s all down to personal taste and, of course, budget as to what you buy.  My rule of thumb is to buy the best I can afford as I’m putting a lot of time, effort and love into each project.

My absolutely favourite yarn shop is Brownberry Yarns.  I’ve mentioned Sarah’s shop here many times before and with good reason.  She stocks lovely yarns and is just delightful.  I know her from my knitting group and can’t recommend her highly enough.

I also use MCA who stock more mainstream yarns and provide a fabulous service.  The Black Sheep was recommended to me by my knitting group and I’ve just placed an order with them saving 50% on the cost of the yarn. Bargain!

I must also mention a couple of ladies I know who are independent yarn producers.  Krafty Koala dyed the yarn for my wedding shrugs and Laal Bear produced the alpaca/silk  blend for my Gingko Shoulderette Shawl.

Now you have your yarn and pattern, should you need to find out how to cast on, or shape an armhole, or knit an icord, I invariably turn to either YouTube or Vogue Knitting:

There are, of course, so many other resources out there….Vogue Knitting Magazine, The Knitter Magazine, Twist Collective,  Interweave Knits….the list goes on.  But you’ve got to start somewhere, so I hope this collection of my “go-to” knitting spots will have you happily tucked up on the sofa with the rest of us.

Goodale – F/O 16/2011

July 18, 2011

Two posts in one day…it must be the weather.

I finally finished knitting up the cream Artesano Superwash Merino last week and on Saturday thought I’d wear it for the quilting day.

Hmmmm….that wasn’t going to work. It looks bloody awful on me.  Not only is it a smidge small, it’s also too short to look good on me and the colour makes me look decidedly unwell.

The pattern itself is lovely.  Clearly written and simple to knit.  I would happily recommend it.

No…this is totally user error.  I’m using up yarn in the stash and choosing a pattern to match what I have.  This doesn’t always work for me.  I’m also still weeding out shapes that don’t look good on me.  This is one of them.

On Ma, however, it’s a totally different story. So, as it had stopped raining, I dragged her outside to grab a couple of snaps…hence the top doesn’t really go with this cardigan, but we can live with it for today. So, the pattern is Goodale from Cecily Glowik MacDonald.

The yarn is Artesano Superwash Merino DK from Brownberry Yarns.

The cute little buttons were in my stash too.  I’ve no idea where they came from.

And it’s not a complete bust as I’ve knitted up more of my stash, Ma has a new cardi that she loves and I’ve learnt a little bit more about my personal style and what works for me.

I don’t think that’s a bad result at all!

Mini-me. Simple hooded cardigan – FO 15/2011

June 2, 2011

Despite the current complete lack of enthusiasm for picking up a needle in any shape or form I managed to sew up The Boy’s latest jacket, made from leftovers of Mr S’s Whitfield Jacket.

The pattern is 70038 Simple Hooded Cardigan from Lion Brand Yarns.  I sized it up one size from the largest on the pattern as I didn’t want quite such a shrunken look.  I also added a collar rather than a hood so its more like his daddy’s jacket.

I love this.  He looks so like his daddy in this cardigan.  Beyond adorable.

He’s very pleased with it and runs around saying “jumper, jumper”.  Although its forecast 25 degrees today, as I type its still cool enough to wear your new jacket to play on the deck.

Perfect.

3 shawls – Made by Ma!

May 23, 2011

Although Ma isn’t having her knee surgery for another 10 days, she’s been busy with the needles and has produced three lovely shawls for me.

The first is the now ubiquitous Multnomah, this time in the left over yarn from the wedding shrugs which was custom dyed for me by Krafty Koala

Multnomah

This is a mix of dk yarn (the stockinette section) and 4 ply (the feather and fan) as we didn’t have enough of either to make a complete shawl and I really didn’t want to waste it.

Next up is Maggie Magali’s Gingko Shoulderette Shawl, available as a free download on Ravelry

Gingko Shoulderette Shawl

This is knitted in The Laal Bear’s hand dyed sock yarn in an alpaca/silk blend in the colour Pampas.  It’s just so soft…like baby bunnies.  I know the most talented people.

And last, but by no means least, is Vermillion by Carolina Diez, also available for free on Ravelry.

Vermillion

This is fyberspates merino tencel sock yarn in their colourway Rusty Spoon, which is so gorgeous, and again the yarn is super soft.

Ma is great (although she won’t let me tell her that, so I’m telling you) and I’m glad it’s so cold here at the moment…I may get to wear them rather than pack them away until the winter.

I can’t wait to see what arrives home next.  I think it’s a hat, but I could be wrong.

PS….I promise to take better care of these and not let them wander off unaccompanied at the cinema!

Another Multnomah – FO 14/2011

May 16, 2011

Following the untimely demise of the last Multnomah scarf I took it upon myself to knit up another one.I’m not completely sure what the yarn is but I suspect it could be Biscottie & Cie Plume fingering in Foret Boréale, but don’t hold me to that!  And it’s dark here today so the colours aren’t as vibrant as they are in real life, even though these are taken in natural light without flash.  Imagine them being about, oh, 100% more intense. Lovely.

BTW – I do like this pattern.  Its the scarf equivalent of the little Chloe cardigans I knit for Button.  Very straightforward and easy to knit.  I do recommend it!

Dennis the Menace – Made by Ma!

May 12, 2011

If he had black hair he’d be Dennis’s doppelgänger!

This is another incarnation of the Ethan sweater made up in Rowan Cotton.

But don’t be fooled by that angelic face.

He can be a proper menace too.

Don’t believe me?

Check out this cheeky faceThat’s more like it!

Tea Party Frock – Made by Ma!

May 7, 2011

The Yarn That Doesn’t Want to be Knitted has finally been conquered.  It’s now a Tea Party Frock by Justine Turner and very lovely it is too.And there was plenty of yarn for Princess Rose to her own Tea Party Frock, so they are understandably thrilled to have the same top.

Ma found this pattern a doddle to knit (hence she didn’t mind knitting two) and Button’s is straight off the needle without being blocked or washed, so will only look better with time.

Button wore this to the plant sale at our local St Catherine’s hospice today and it was very much commented on and admired.

She’s so happy she’s sending fish kisses to Grandma

Ethan – Made by Ma!

April 5, 2011

I love Sirdar Crofter yarn.  It looks cute and is one of those yarns you can just chuck in the washing machine and tumble dryer without batting an eyelash.

So we’re thrilled to bits with The Boy’s latest sweater. The pattern is Ethan from Patons Play Days Book 4It’s perfect for playing in the park.  Thanks Ma!

New in blue – Made by Ma!

March 27, 2011

Button has a new cardigan, the lucky girl.

The pattern is Vintage Snuggly DK Knits from Sirdar, view B.

And there’s even a matching bag! Just perfect for pennies and sunglasses (she’s her mother’s daughter, for sure).

What more does a girl need?

**********************************************

PS. Sorry about the crappy photos, but we were rushing to buy lining before the shop closed.  You know how that works, right?

PPS.  You’re right…it is a bit big on her…but the weather is starting to warm up here (finally) and this will see her through the whole year.

PPS. If you think this is big, wait till you see the refashioned jacket.  I had no intention of that not fitting her in the autumn!  And yes, it’s finished.  I sewed the buttons tonight.  It just needs a quick press and a photo shoot.

Debbie Bliss zipped jacket with hood – Made by Ma

February 24, 2011

Hoodies are much reviled by the tabloid press in the UK…the word is synonymous with oiky youths loitering with intent, drinking cheap cider, smoking banned substances and bashing old ladies over the head so they can nick their pensions.

This Hoodie, however, doesn’t come much cuter:

The pattern is taken from Debbie Bliss’s book Cotton Knits for All Seasons

which is chock full of gorgeous patterns (which I suppose is only what we’ve come to expect of the lovely DB).

Here’s a close up of the stitch detail:

The yarn is Sirdar Country Style DK in shade 595 Highland Burn which is a predominately man-made yarn with a little wool, making it the perfect choice for intrepid small people.  I bought this from MCA Direct from whom I’ve only ever received really excellent service (and no, I don’t have any connection, financial or otherwise with them!).

Oh, and there’s plenty of growing room.  Bonus.

Thanks Ma!
