In my usual fashion of making the most simple garments a little less simple, I decided to add the patch pockets to the back of the skirt and quite a bit of top-stitching too!
Despite that, all I have to do is finish the waistband and stitch the hem.
The hem will be top-stitched, but the waistband will be hand-sewn on the inside to allow for easy alteration later should I need it.
And best of all…I really love this skirt. It comes together really nicely and is slightly pegged so is a super flattering shape.
So tomorrow, I’ve a little hand-sewing, a little top-stitching on the hem and I can crack on with the top! Woot! I always did work best with a deadline…even if it is a self-imposed one!
Oh my word! Your stitching is gorgeous!
Thank you!
I love your topstitching and love the color of the fabric !
Thank you…it’s more indigo in real life, but I love the cross hatching effect of the fabric.
Gasp! What is it about contrast topstitching that gets us all hot and bothered?? I don’t know a single sewist for whom this isn’t the case. 🙂 Can’t wait to see more!!
Seriously! We are all gasping with envy- you have a steady hand!
You guys are just too sweet! I do enjoy topstitching and just take it slow!
I love the contrast top-stitching!
Thank you. 🙂
Wow! That is just all-around beautiful!
Thanks so much!
It’s beautiful!! I can’t wait to see the finished outfit. You always inspire me!
What a lovely comment…thank you! 😀
I’m just going to repeat what everyone wrote before me – you’ve done the most awesome job with your topstitching! (newbie question – what kind of thread did you use for it?). I’m very interested to see how the patch pockets look too.
That’s so kind.
You can actually buy topstitching thread, which is thicker than normal sewing thread and lays nicely on the top of the fabric. Then I use a longer stitch and a jeans machine needle and take it reeeeeeeeally slowly. It’s not difficult…I really enjoy topstitching.
The pockets were cut across the grain to add a little texture (and because I was really tight for fabric and didn’t want to skimp on the size of the pocket.
Oh I see that now about how the pockets were cut. Thank you so much for the details! I have denim to make another version of this skirt and would really like to try topstitching.
I’ll warn you that once you’ve had a go there is no going back…you’ll be topstitching everything. I’ve just been listening to ThreadCult’s interview with Angela Wolf and she has videos on topstitching on her blog. It may help.
Wow! You are super quick .. it has taken me a week not to sew the skirt part of a dress I’m making my daughter lol! Love the top stitching by the way 🙂
It’s most unlike me to be this speedy. 😉 Thanks re the topstitching!
How lovely that it’s all come together so quickly. Hope the top works just as well
Thank you…me too! 😉
I like that yellow look! Nice idea! You are really blazing fast… Can’t wait to see it on you
I was looking at the different thread colours and this one just spoke to me!
N
Nearly done!
Done…just off to start on the top!:-D
Hurray… can’t wait to see whole outfit!
Me too…not long now! 😉
Looking nice 🙂
Thank you.
Perfect stitching lines!! 🙂
Oh you’re too kind. #blushing
Ooh, that’s looking lovely! I can’t resist adding topstitching to things sometimes, particularly if I’m working with denim. I went mad with it on some denim capris I made recently. Look forward to seeing the finished skirt!
Denim begs for topstitching, don’t you think? I do love it…you can really play around with it and get different looks.
Beautiful stitching – I need to stop being afraid of Denim!
Seriously…it’s so easy to sew with. It doesn’t wiggle and presses nicely and, as you can see, holds a topstitch very nicely indeed!
