More stitches from Ma Stitches

October 10, 2009

It was a cold and windy day in Lancashire yesterday (big surprise there) but Little Stitch didn’t mind because she was wearing the second cardigan recently completed by Ma Stitches:DSCF3003_0053_edited-1

I’ve fiddled with the colour and whilst this photo still doesn’t accurately reflect the wonderful depth of the purple of the yarn, it’s reasonably near.  The pattern is from the same book as the little yellow cabled number; the yarn is Phildar Oxygene in Prune that I bought in France during out last trip.

As always, Little Stitch looks adorable in it, so thanks again, Ma, for another hit knit.

Ma Stitches stitches – part one

September 29, 2009

Ma Stitches has been busy and here’s the first of two beautiful creations she brought up for a very lucky Little Stitch during her visit last week:171

The second knit awaits buttons.  I’ll post about it when they are sewn on. Both are knitted from this book:

I, on the other hand, am meeting myself coming back and not getting very much done at all.  Most frustrating!

Still loving Chloe

September 3, 2009

Well, theres not a lot to add to my previous post about the multicoloured Chloe, except that I’m still loving this pattern; this time it’s the raspberry pink Sublime double knit.  004Despite being re-knitted yarn, knit on needles larger than recommended to get the right tension, this has come out really nicely again.

Yay!!!!

In sewing news, my plans are slowly formulating.  I’m actually working on my first full outfit, which is trousers, a top and a cardigan, which I’m hoping to reveal soon.  It’s the first time I’ve actually done the whole outfit thing when sewing and I’m finding it really quite exciting.  I’m hoping to get some sewing in over the weekend as both radiator covers are now painted and ready for fitting.

So, watch this space.

Chloe…how I love thee!

August 23, 2009

I adore this little cardigan.

048

Even though I had to undo the whole thing because of the lack of common sense and swatching, I still absolutely adore it.

It’s terribly easy to knit, looks fantastic and is super versatile. The raspberry version is coming along nicely and will be finished this week. Although the original pattern was made up as a stripe, both of my versions are knit in just one yarn and I love them.  It’s a great transition piece and fabulous with jeans and more dressy outfits for Little Stitch.  I love it so much I’m thinking of a red version to go with a little pink and red Mini Boden dress gifted to LS by Julia.

Oooooh…obsessed…moi?

Busy doing nothing

August 19, 2009

Mr S has marshaled the support of all my chums in his campaign to make me take it easy.

It seems he’s even convinced Little Stitch to help, as daily she works hard to master this walking thing, thus meaning that Mummy has less carrying of her to do.  She astonishes me daily as she masters new skills and we found out last week that all developmental delay has been made up and she’s now doing all the things she should be by now, and some that would be expected of a 2 year old.  She’s just the most amazing little person.

I’ve been banned from the workroom again this week…sigh.  But then, to be fair, other than the black checked wrap blouse and some curtain projects, I really don’t know what I’d be sewing at the moment.

I have to own to feeling blocked.  My wardrobe is so sparse that even the moths have moved out due to the starvation rations.  I’m also still carrying far too much weight, which isn’t really conducive to fashion because you feel like everything looks wrong, and it sure as eggs is eggs feels wrong.

It all becomes the most ridiculous vicious circle where you feel like nothing looks good on you, so you don’t make anything, then you have an empty wardrobe, so don’t know where to start to fill it up because its such a ginormous task, and you don’t feel that anything looks good on you anyway.

So I know I need to stop, take stock and make a plan.  I’m thinking of making a small wardrobe of quick to make basics to see me through whilst I work on losing the weight and getting back to my normal tiggerish self.  Just not sure what it looks like yet.

Which is perfect timing seeing as the Rest and Relaxation Mafia are hard at work.

But one good thing about the R&R Mafia is that Ma and Pa Stitches-in-Law had Little Stitch yesterday for her usual visit, but she’s stayed with them a wee bit longer than normal whilst I snuck off to the cinema to see Coco Avant Chanel.

All I can say, is if you haven’t seen this film yet…hotfoot off to your local cinema and give yourself a treat.  It really is just the most marvellous film.  I was left breathless by the cinematography. Audrey Tautou is her usual luminescent self, and the whole production is just glorious.  I’m tempted to go again to see it at the cinema and will definitely be buying the DVD as soon as it hits the shelves.

I’ve also finished the little multi coloured cardigan for Little Stitch. I’m so thrilled with it that I’ve pulled out the orphaned raspberry merino yarn and worked a swatch for that tonight and cast on another one for her.  The multi one is currently blocking overnight and I’ll photograph it in the next couple of days once I’ve got a button on it.

This is why you always do a swatch!

August 10, 2009

I swear that sometimes I could kick myself for being such a dummy.

I was so excited to get going with the little multicoloured cardigan for Little Stitch that I chose the size, cast on, and knit, knit, knit.

Fool.

I cast off, and tried the resulting garment on her, only to find that, surprise, surprise, it didn’t fit!

I frogged the yarn back onto the ball and today sat down to cast on again.  This time I did the swatch:

That'll explain it!
That’ll explain it!

As it’s half an inch out on the swatch it’s no wonder the finished result was way too small.

So the moral of this story is always do the swatch.  I know they get in the way of starting your new project but they’re worth it in the long run.  I’m off to work out exactly what size needles I need to use to get the right size this time.

…from the ridiculous to the sublime.  A total change of quality of yarn from the Sirdar Just Soya to this little beauty that was a very generous gift to Little Stitch from Black Purl:016009The picture doesn’t do the jewel like quality of the colours justice, nor the wonderous softness of the yarn, but I’ve cast on and knit the first couple of rows of Chloe from Never Not Knitting and already its looking like this:018Glorious.  Thank you, Black Purl!

Cabled raglan baby sweater

July 24, 2009

We had a little Swine Flu scare Chez Stitches this morning…fortunately it’s turned out to be just a case of Man Flu!  So we’re all on the sofa watching Madagascar and I’ve taken the opportunity whilst Little Stitch (and Mr Stitch for that matter) is sat quietly to finish off the cabled baby sweater.

It’s knitted in Sirdar Just Soya, which is without doubt the splittiest yarn I’ve ever used.  However it creates a soft, drapey fabric which is lovely for the shape of this cardigan.

Hot off of the needles - not blocked or even washed!

I quickly snuck it onto Little Stitch for a try on.  As planned it’s big on her.  As it’s going to be a couple of months before she needs woolies on a regular basis, even though she’s growing at the moment there’s plenty of room to make sure this sees her through the winter.003Next!!!

We interrupt our scheduled sewing…

July 6, 2009

…to rustle up a quick (for me, anyway) robe.004

Close of the belt loop - cord made from 4 strands of thread

Close up of the belt loop - cord made from 4 strands of thread

It’s made up in Amy Butler Lotus Tree Peony in Slate. I ordered this from the States, via Fabric Supplies on Etsy. It only took a week for the fabric to arrive. The best part is that, even including shipping costs, the fabric was cheaper to import than to buy in the UK.  Strange but true.

I’m awaiting the complimentary spot fabric to make matching pyjama bottoms. It’s en route.  I’m hoping they turn out as well as the robe. I’m awfully pleased with it. The pattern is a Burda envelope pattern that I’ve made up before. This time I altered the kimono sleeves to reduce them in width and length.  They’re much more practical this way.

Also going well is the Cabled Raglan Baby Sweater, a free downloadable pattern from knittingdaily.com.009

The gingham wrap blouse, on the other hand, is giving me heebies.

I’d planned to do the full bust adjustment shown in the April/May 2009 edition of  Threads magazine.  A cunning plan as this blouse doesn’t have a dart and I wanted to add one.  However, as cunning plans are wont to do, this one failed at the first hurdle.

The blouse has yoke panels.  And front gathering.

So it’s beyond the wit of me to work out how to do the illustrated dart insertion with those added features.

Enter Plan B.

I’m making a toile.  I’ve just cut out the size I need, am going to sew it up and then see where the kinks are and work from there.  More time consuming, sure, but better than wasting any more time trying to figure it out on paper, poring over texts for help or just generally cussing at the pattern in a most unladylike fashion.

I’m planning to sew it up tomorrow and try it on.  I’ll let you know how I get on.

Herding cats

June 18, 2009

Have you ever tried to photograph small children wearing the fruits of your labours?

No?  Neither had I until today.

The old adage about children and animals is starting to ring very true!

011As you can imagine, the chapeau didn’t stay in place for very long!

The pattern is from a very old Debbie Bliss book that I’ve had for a gazillion years and just keep returning to.

The jacket is a little on the large size, but I’ll be damned if I’m knitting something, even this simple, that will only get a couple of outings before it’s too small.  The yarn is Patons Eco Cotton.  It’s machine washable and I’m interested to see how it washes and wears.

Oh, and yes, the weather in Lancashire is so appalling at the moment that a hat isn’t a completely insane choice of project!  Saints preserve us, its a wonder we don’t all have webbed feet.  Although…there are a couple of people in the village that walk in a very suspicious manner.

Altogether more successful than the hot pink…which has now been completely undone and is awaiting a new choice of pattern.  Patience was never one of my virtues (stop sniggering, family…I can hear you, you know!) and I’ve no time for misbehaving patterns.  I’d rather give a less troublesome design an opportunity to shine.
