It’s oh so quiet…shhhhh! shhhhh!

January 14, 2010

It’s quiet here.

Too damned quiet if you ask me.

The dog is asleep in front of the fire.

The cat is asleep behind the filing cabinet.

The baby is asleep with her arms around her favourite toy puppy.

Mr S is in a hotel room in Wimbledon, working.

I hate it when he’s away.  I’m not frightened in the house without him.  I’ve lived on my own for too many years to be frightened in a house on my own. And I have a big soft dog who does a great impression of Kujo and a very grumpy cat.

No. It’s just the quiet.  A little too much of it.

No rubbish TV programmes.  No kisses on my cheek as I cook dinner.  No stupid jokes.  No conversation.  No hugs.

No snoring.

Ah…I knew there had to be an upside!

That, and finally getting up into the workroom and finishing the last seam on the face fabric of the kitchen door curtain!

Ready for stitching!

I do miss him, but I do get stuff done!  Tomorrow night it’s hems until he gets home.  And he’s away 3 nights next week. So you never know.  I might actually finish this sooner rather than later.

Now.  Where’s that glass of wine I promised myself……..

Tomorrow is another day

January 13, 2010

Today I had a long list of things to do.  Most of them fairly easy to box off.  All of them pretty mundane:

1. Now the roads are clear (ish) again, get my lardy arse to the gym and start doing something about it.  Check…not a huge workout but definitely better than nothing.

2. Do my roots…4 weeks since the last colour and I look like Mrs Badger.  Check…Badger tendencies at bay for another couple of weeks.

3. Organise Button’s birthday get together for the weekend.  Check…messages sent to all concerned to let them know it’s going ahead.

4. Laundry.  Check…this is easy enough to work around other stuff.  Although I’ve still two loads to do.  Which begs the question…just how much laundry can three people create?

5. Ironing. Are you serious!!!!!

6. Fix my embroidery frame to stop it whizzing round and releasing the tension on the fabric.  Check…Turned out to be a 1 minute ‘remove washer’ fix.  Hurrah!!!

7. Study.

8. Finish sewing the face fabric panels together for the kitchen curtain.

Hmmmmm!!!  7 and 8 are where the problem arose.  In the form of a tiny, blond time thief who flatly refused to have a nap and screamed the house down if you tried.

So I managed all of about 20cms of hand sewing on the curtains.  They are starting to feel never ending.  I’ve only managed to get two of the three seams sewn on the face fabric.  The lining is still a crumpled pile of fabric.  And the pole arrives tomorrow.

So…we did what any sensible girls would have done at this point:

We twirled!!!!

We played with Timmy and Yabba and Dolly.

We read books about a cake baking Bunny.

We ate birthday cake.

We tickled.

We ran up and down the hall shrieking like a banshee (obviously I passed on that particular one).

What the heck…tomorrow is another day.

Joy to the world!

December 21, 2009

I can hear the cheers now.

“Hurrah!!! Hurrah!!!! We don’t have to listen to her banging on about those dratted curtains any more!”

But rest assured, no one is as thrilled as I am that these are finally, finally, sewn and at the window. These pics were taken seconds after the curtains were hung.  To get a really crisp finish to the way they hang I have to inflict a little bit of Jacob Marley bondage bandage to them:When the ties come off in a few days the pleats will be crisp all the way to the hem and will hold their shape and look lovely.

All this room needs now is the radiator cover (which is just awaiting a visit to the builders merchants for grille) and a skirt valance for the divan base, which I’m hoping to do before the New Year (subject to enthusiasm and a willingness to sew rather than sitting watching movies and eating chocolates).

Hanging around

November 23, 2009

There has been a lot of talk recently Chez Stitches about the outstanding curtains that need making.  Unfortunately the amount of sewing hasn’t remotely matched the amount of talking.

When I did get round to sewing the curtains for Button’s room (she’s had a blind since she arrived but the curtains hadn’t quite made it to the sewing table) I managed to make a complete and total mess of the pleating.

After much cursing and even more deft handiwork with a seam ripper, they are now finished and hanging, although they still need to be properly “dressed” to set the pleats, but its far to cold to not use them at the moment so that will have to wait.

These are just a simple lined curtain with a hand pleated buckram heading.  No interlining.

The next pair is on the table already.  All cut and ready to sew.  They are the duck egg silk curtains with a beaded edge for our bedroom.  They will be interlined so will take a little time to make as they are completely hand sewn. But I think they’ll be worth it.

It’s fashion, dahling

November 15, 2009

Summers-jeans21Start ’em young, I say.

Well, it’s been a busy weekend. And we couldn’t have done it without Dave and Simon’s muscles.  Thanks guys!  We are blessed with our friends.

Ma is safely ensconced in her new pad and it’s looking lovely already, despite the large piles of boxes.  We thought the big van was overkill…it wasn’t.

We won’t talk about the driving rain, high winds, accidents (not us, thankfully), broken windows (that was definitely us) and broken cookers that conspired against us!

Ma and Pa Stitches-in-Law have been chief babysitters all weekend, for which we are immensely grateful, and whilst Button was with them today Pa SIL took these pictures of Button’s new jeans. And her auditioning for Anna Wintour’s job, above! You may remember that I copied a pair of ready to wear to make the pattern.  I’ve added a little to the front for the next pair, but all in all, I’m pleased with the result.Summers-jeans32Summers-jeans22

Still loving Chloe

September 3, 2009

Well, theres not a lot to add to my previous post about the multicoloured Chloe, except that I’m still loving this pattern; this time it’s the raspberry pink Sublime double knit.  004Despite being re-knitted yarn, knit on needles larger than recommended to get the right tension, this has come out really nicely again.

Yay!!!!

In sewing news, my plans are slowly formulating.  I’m actually working on my first full outfit, which is trousers, a top and a cardigan, which I’m hoping to reveal soon.  It’s the first time I’ve actually done the whole outfit thing when sewing and I’m finding it really quite exciting.  I’m hoping to get some sewing in over the weekend as both radiator covers are now painted and ready for fitting.

So, watch this space.

Oh! I. Give. Up!

August 28, 2009

Still basking in the glow of renewed enthusiasm for the much loved and much neglected (in this house at least) art of dressmaking, and housebound because of the high winds and torrential rain battering the house, I decided to spend a happy hour cutting out jeans for Little Stitch and the black and white gingham blouse for myself.

Ahhhh, the best laid plans of mice and sewers.

The jeans that Ma S-I-L had donated to the cause are far too tiny to be cut for Little Stitch.  I’m going to have to filch an old pair from get Mr Stitch to find an old pair of his, and try those, or, sadly, I will just have to go fabric shopping next week. Tragic!

So I pinned the pattern to the board for later and laid the fabric and pattern pieces for the blouse on the table ready to press, pin and cut:001

Hmmm. At first glance this looks like it’s going to work, but what you can’t see is that the fabric has a flaw.  A yellow line running down each edge of the fabric, intermittently, about 5 or 6 centimetres in from the selvedge.  On both selvedges. As the fabric has been washed and I don’t have a receipt, there is little I can do about this.

So, as I have to cut around the flaw, there simply isn’t enough fabric.

At this point I suggest you insert your own expletive.

Thankfully, there’s enough fabric to cut a shell top, with a short sleeve, if I cut carefully.  It won’t shouldn’t take me long to draft that, but at this point I’m doing the wise thing.

I’ve packed the pattern away for another day (before I put a match to it), ditto the fabric.  I’m pouring myself a glass of something therapeutic and curling up with my man, Ugly Betty and my knitting.

I’m making a start on this for Mr Stitch:

From Classic Knits for Men

From Classic Knits for Men

It’s official title is “Snowflake Jacket” but Chez Stitches its “The Starsky and Hutch Cardigan”.  I’m not doing it in the proscribed yarn as Rowan yarns and I simply don’t get on, but in Patons Jet, which I bought for the princely sum of 79p a ball!

I shall, of course, be starting off with a swatch!

Busy doing nothing

August 19, 2009

Mr S has marshaled the support of all my chums in his campaign to make me take it easy.

It seems he’s even convinced Little Stitch to help, as daily she works hard to master this walking thing, thus meaning that Mummy has less carrying of her to do.  She astonishes me daily as she masters new skills and we found out last week that all developmental delay has been made up and she’s now doing all the things she should be by now, and some that would be expected of a 2 year old.  She’s just the most amazing little person.

I’ve been banned from the workroom again this week…sigh.  But then, to be fair, other than the black checked wrap blouse and some curtain projects, I really don’t know what I’d be sewing at the moment.

I have to own to feeling blocked.  My wardrobe is so sparse that even the moths have moved out due to the starvation rations.  I’m also still carrying far too much weight, which isn’t really conducive to fashion because you feel like everything looks wrong, and it sure as eggs is eggs feels wrong.

It all becomes the most ridiculous vicious circle where you feel like nothing looks good on you, so you don’t make anything, then you have an empty wardrobe, so don’t know where to start to fill it up because its such a ginormous task, and you don’t feel that anything looks good on you anyway.

So I know I need to stop, take stock and make a plan.  I’m thinking of making a small wardrobe of quick to make basics to see me through whilst I work on losing the weight and getting back to my normal tiggerish self.  Just not sure what it looks like yet.

Which is perfect timing seeing as the Rest and Relaxation Mafia are hard at work.

But one good thing about the R&R Mafia is that Ma and Pa Stitches-in-Law had Little Stitch yesterday for her usual visit, but she’s stayed with them a wee bit longer than normal whilst I snuck off to the cinema to see Coco Avant Chanel.

All I can say, is if you haven’t seen this film yet…hotfoot off to your local cinema and give yourself a treat.  It really is just the most marvellous film.  I was left breathless by the cinematography. Audrey Tautou is her usual luminescent self, and the whole production is just glorious.  I’m tempted to go again to see it at the cinema and will definitely be buying the DVD as soon as it hits the shelves.

I’ve also finished the little multi coloured cardigan for Little Stitch. I’m so thrilled with it that I’ve pulled out the orphaned raspberry merino yarn and worked a swatch for that tonight and cast on another one for her.  The multi one is currently blocking overnight and I’ll photograph it in the next couple of days once I’ve got a button on it.

The terrible, thrown together, third toile!

August 13, 2009

Try saying that after a couple of glasses of vino!

However, today, whilst Little Stitch held a very in-depth conversation with Benjy the Bear, non of which I understood, I finally quickly stitched up the third toile:

Crikey! Shoot the photographer!
Crikey! Shoot the photographer!

The sewing is shocking (for which I take full “credit”) and the pictures are pretty grim, but Mr S was working at the time, so very kindly quickly snapped me before going back to some hideously dull, but hugely important document.

Now, I know the gathers need some work, and this toile doesn’t have the back darts in that will give it more shape, but overall, I think it’s good to go.  I know I need to add a little length because if I turn up a hem it will be too short. And don’t forget there’s a tiny stand collar to add as well.  But I think any remaining faults are with my figure rather than the blouse.

I have to admit to being more than a little relieved.  I’m beyond bored of fitting this blouse, and had this toile not been as near as this one is to being usable, the pattern would have been shredded and the fabric turned into picnic napkins!

Merry Christmas, Ma Stitches

August 10, 2009

I suspect anyone who has read recent posts is now thinking “Wow…she’s really lost the plot this time”.

But no.  You may recall me posting about this skirt I made for Ma Stitches-in-Law for her Christmas gift.  Well, I’d also promised Ma a skirt for her Christmas gift, but with everything that’s been going on, we’d not had the opportunity to choose her fabric.

This was rectified during her recent visit and I’ve been slowly pootling through it a few stitches at a time. It really shouldn’t have taken as long to do as it has, but, voila:008

its finally done.

This is just a simple self drafted A line skirt.  The fabric is a cotton batik print from John Lewis, lined with cotton lawn. It’s been a nice change from fiddling with the now dreaded wrap blouse and I’m pleased with the finished result.

So, Ma, Merry Christmas!

(Mr Stitches will deliver the skirt and the pattern for you with the other bag of goodies on his next trip to London.)
