KCWC – Spring 2013

April 23, 2013

KCW

It’s Kids Clothes Week this week and I’m taking the opportunity to clear down some projects that have been languishing in the sewing loft for quite a while. There are 3 t-shirts from Ma SIL, a 1/2 yard length of double jersey, and the red fabric I bought on Saturday, which has been claimed by Miss Button.

I would point out that I knew she wanted a red dress, so bought her some fabric with KCW in mind…

IMG_7822_edited-2

…only to be informed, in no uncertain terms, that it was entirely the wrong colour of red and therefore completely unacceptable.  That girl of mine certainly knows her own mind!

The piece I bought on Saturday, on the other hand, was immediately swooped upon with squeals of glee…so we are sharing it!

IMG_7819_edited-1

I’m nabbing the original piece to make a top for me, to go with a skirt from the solid red.  I’ve been jonesing for a red outfit for a while…this will certainly fit the bill.

But I digress. The idea of KCW is to spend an hour a day on sewing dedicated to the small people. Yesterday I spent the time happily cutting out t-shirts and shorts.  It would be so easy to make a huge list of things, only to be beaten by the clock. I’d rather have a small pile of quick wins and get some more pieces out of the loft and into Button’s wardrobe.

So…I’ll be making 2 Beachy Boatneck tees:

beachy boatneckand 2 pairs of Bubble Pocket Shorts, of course:

bpsI think it’s a doable list…we shall see!

Elegance & Elephants Bubble Pocket Shorts – FO 4/2013

April 19, 2013

Oh, that Heidi! She’s a marvel!

newbutton_zpsa7ba2d49

She makes the most delicious patterns.

bpsHot on the heels of the fabulous Ruffle Top pattern, today she’s launching the much anticipated Bubble Pocket Shorts pattern.

I swoon!

I was delighted to be asked to participate in pattern testing them.  Lucky me!

IMG_7701_edited-1Hot pink embroidered cotton.

IMG_7759_edited-1They are too adorable for words. I just know this will be my go-to pattern for the summer.

IMG_7717_edited-1These shorts are a joy to make – simple and straightforward to sew.  The pattern is beautifully drafted and the PDF is so well tiled. The pattern pieces tape together perfectly and in a jiffy.

You can go from inbox to completed in a gentle afternoon’s sewing.  With tea breaks.

IMG_7716_edited-1Heidi’s instructions are a joy!  Clear, detailed and beautifully illustrated with step-by-step photographs.  She holds your hand every step of the way.  I would recommend this pattern to any confident beginner.  The Sailor version might need a bit more experience, but the Classic version, shown here, are really not at all difficult…if you can sew straight lines and insert elastic, I promise you that you can make these shorts.

IMG_7681_edited-1One word of warning, though…when you do make them you’ll have no end of trouble getting your little fashionista to take them off.  We nearly had tears, she loves them so much.

And you’ll have to make her a matching ruffle top tunic too!  More of that when I can convince madam to partake in a photoshoot (stroppy little minx!).

But I can deal with that…and I recommend you dash off now and get your copy.  New shorts for the weekend, anybody?

The-rod-for-my-own-back shirt – FO 3/2013

March 12, 2013

The Husband’s shirt was finished last weekend and has already been worn twice.  It would have been worn more if I’d been swifter with the laundry and ironing.

IMG_7338_edited-1The days he couldn’t wear it I got the big sad eyes.

IMG_7344_edited-1I also been given details of plenty of variations on the theme that he feels would look just perfect in his wardrobe.  Different colours, contrasts, trims. He’s got it all sussed.

IMG_7343_edited-1

So it appears that as well as making my husband a shirt that he absolutely loves, I’ve also made a rod for my own back…I’ll be making this shirt again, for sure.

The pattern, you may recall, is McCalls 6613.

M6613

M6613

I have to admit to having quite mixed feelings about this pattern.

It’s actually drafted really well, except that there is no placket on the sleeve. Seriously…would it have been that much extra work for them to include a sleeve placket.  It’s a SHIRT, for heaven’s sake.

The instructions also don’t call for flat felled seams.  At which point I’m compelled to repeat myself…its. a. SHIRT. people!  Every RTW shirt in The Husband’s wardrobe has flat felled seams.

I chose to add them…which then resulted in the need for a “design feature” on the sleeve opening…because there’s no placket!  Hence the red grosgrain…which has turned out to be a favourite feature.

Funky details

But whilst I was frustrated with these omissions, and the generally weak instructions, the shirt itself fitted perfectly pretty much out of the envelope. The only adjustment I needed to make was to add 6cms across the back to accommodate his rugby shoulders.

IMG_7346_edited-1

You can’t really complain about that, can you?

So, I will be making this again, but next time I’ll draft a sleeve placket just to make it perfect.  But either way, I’ve got a happy husband…and that’s always a good thing, in my book.

Elegance & Elephants Ruffle Tunic Top – FO 02/2013

March 6, 2013

Last week I was giddy with excitement to be chosen as one of the pattern testers for the new Ruffle Tunic Top for Elegance & Elephants.   It’s Heidi’s first PDF pattern (hopefully the first of many) and it’s just delightful.

ruffle collage 2Each of the 3 versions, tunic top, A Line dress and swing dress are adorable. Can’t you see the swing dress in cotton voile or eyelet for summer birthday parties?

For the testing I made the A Line dress from some cute nautical print cotton that I’d been gifted by Himmelbjerget.

IMG_7233_edited-1

I’m not the worlds speediest seamstress, but even I had this dress sewn and on a small girl within an afternoon. I was amazed!

IMG_7243_edited-1The pattern is so beautifully drafted and it’s a joy to sew.  It’s hard to believe this is Heidi’s first pattern…she’s done an amazing job on it.  I’ve sewn PDFs for the kids from several independent companies and this is without a doubt the best drafting of them all.

IMG_7272_edited-1

The ruffles add a cute edge to the styling…and wouldn’t they look great in contrasting fabric?

IMG_7273_edited-1

You could also add contrast neck binding and ties.  And piping at the princess seams.  So many options!

IMG_7274_edited-1

There are no zips or buttonholes or tricky fastenings. The instructions are clear with great photos to help you along. This dress could easily be sewn by a confident beginner with great results.

And although I tested the age 6 pattern, which I’d thought would absolutely drown Button as she’s so petite, the ties at the back cinch it in nicely so she can wear it now, with room to grow.

IMG_7264_edited-1Which is a relief, because she absolutely loves this dress…and it passed the twirl test.  Which, as we all know is the most important test of all!

I’m delighted to say that this pattern will be on sale next week.  If I were you I’d be hanging around Elegance & Elephants until it becomes available, then nab your pattern as soon as possible. Or maybe just follow her blog and FB so you don’t miss out.

Either way,  I think you’ll love this pattern as much as we do.

The almost shirt and some future t-shirts

February 14, 2013

Such a creative post title!  One day soon I’ll actually have a finished project to show you…but not today!

IMG_0586_edited-1

The Husband’s Christmas shirt is slowly coming together….I’ve just front plackets, collar and stand, buttonholes and buttons to do.

Just!

I swear this is testing my abilities to the max and is full of creative “design features”! 😉

His birthday is in March and I’m determined to have it finished by then.

I’m even more motivated at the moment as I learned this week that I’ve won a copy of Sewaholic’s much loved, and much coveted, Renfrew from Miranda at One Little Minute, as part of her Stretch Yourself blog series.   It’s a really cool series of posts all about working with knit fabrics, and it’s really informative and user friendly.

I’m ridiculously excited at the prospect of finally having my own copy of Renfrew.  I’ probably the last sewist on the planet to actually make this, but I’m hoping it will be worth the wait.

renfrew

Much as I’m keen to start on the 13 dresses…my wardrobe is particularly sparse at the moment and I need some everyday, school run basics.  Renfrew will fit that bill perfectly with jeans and I already have 3 pieces of fabric in the stash that will be fantastic!

IMG_7097_edited-1

Ok…this is an odd photo because it’s heavily cropped, but it does show the three fabrics.  The one on the left is a heavy navy I bought from The Cloth House during my last visit to London…the green and brown prints are from my lovely friend Liz’s stash.

I think by the time I’ve made these three I’ll have ironed out any fitting issues with the pattern and will have a TNT t-shirt pattern that I can pretty much cut and sew.

I’m very excited about that prospect.  It’ll be my second TNT pattern…having already got a pretty well-fitting trouser pattern.  I’ve wanted to created a portfolio of TNT patterns for so long, I’m pinching myself that I’m finally making a start.

Fire up the Quattro!

February 5, 2013

GeneHunt_MG_3031-3I’ve come over all Gene Hunt today and finally fired up the Quattro*…or, in this case, the sewing machine.

shirt1Why yes…that is The Husband’s shirt that I’m working on!

I know it’s February and I haven’t completed a single thing so far this year…but at least I’ve finally, finally made a start on some sewing.

It feels good.  Despite the crappy instructions on this pattern and the fact that it’s happy for you to leave unfinished seams!  I’m now making it up as I go along and so far so good.

And tonight I’ll be ‘aving ‘oops for my tea!*

* If you haven’t watched Life on Mars, and are therefore bemused by these references, what are you doing here?  I suggest you go get a copy as quickly as you can and don’t surface again until you’ve finished!  And you need to make sure it’s the UK version…Philip Glenister is inspired as Gene Hunt. Inspired, I tell you!

A reminder

January 27, 2013

don't forget

If you find that you need to alter a pattern, say by adding 3 cms of width to a shirt back and yoke to accommodate ridiculously broad shoulders, can I suggest that you remember to also alter any adjoining pattern pieces.  Maybe add 3 cms to the collar stand and collar too.

Otherwise you might find yourself waking at 4am in a cold sweat having realised what you’ve done.  Or not done, as the case may be.

And then spending some time that would be better spent sleeping wondering if you have enough scrap fabric to recut the adjusted collar and collar stand. And if the light sleepers in your house will be disturbed if you sneak up to the sewing loft to find out the answer to your fabric dilemma.  And if you can actually be bothered to get out from underneath the super cosy duvet and quilt to shiver your way up there anyway.

I’m not saying I actually made this mistake, but if I had I’d be awfully glad that I had enough waste fabric to cut new collar and stands, and only need to buy a bit of extra interfacing tomorrow to get myself to the point where I can actually start sewing.

The wrong trousers

January 11, 2013

The children have been introduced to Wallace and Gromit over the Christmas break and they are entranced.

wrong trousers

Unfortunately, Wallace’s genius for incompetence in his creations has spilled over to my sewing loft.

I finally got the 2 pairs of upcycled jeans finished for Button this week.

IMG_7011_edited-1

You know…the ones I started in October of last year.

Just the 2 1/2 months then.

Which, whilst not a hanging offence in itself, doesn’t take into account the annoying tendency of small people to grow.

Right out of the jeans you should have finished for her 2 months ago!

Cue expletive of your own choice!  I had several!

For a split second I was tempted to let The Boy wear them…but figured that floral Liberty print pocket linings probably weren’t a look he’d want to rock…and that the grandparents wouldn’t forgive me.

Thankfully, his best friend at nursery is a delightful, curly haired little moppet and these jeans will fit her perfectly.

Phew!

A pair of perfect patterns

December 17, 2012

Ok…I know…enough with the alliteration already!  I just couldn’t resist but I will do better next time!

This post verges on showing off, but I’m so lucky and so thrilled I just had to share.

First up…my in-laws bought me Colette’s Anise jacket pattern as a congratulations for my exam results.

1023-cover-large-1468376a12321e0c4bde022efa4bcc16I have some stunningly beautiful Scottish tweed that my friend Liz gifted to me that will be perfect for this.  I would share a photo of the fabric but it’s hidden under a pile of Christmas gifts at the moment.  The sewing room is the acknowledged hiding place for presents pre-Christmas as it’s out of bounds for the kids unless I’m with them!

The fabric is about 20 years old and in pristine condition…and is the colour of Scottish meadows.  It’s so beautiful and I knew as soon as I saw it that the only jacket I wanted to make with it was Anise.

So you can imagine the squealing that ensued Chez Stitches when the postman brought me a lovely package from The Village Haberdashery last week with this pattern in it.

It will be my first foray into tailoring of any sort, but I do have the Anise companion booklet, so I think I’m in safe hands.  I just need to hunt down some lovely lining fabric to make the whole thing pop!

As if that wasn’t enough…the lovely Andrea over at Stitch Parade recently held a very generous giveaway and I won the Miz Mozelle Dress pattern by Jamie Christina!

miz-mozelle-cover_1_1024x1024

I can’t tell you how delighted I am.

I’m planning to sew a whole raft of dresses next year and this is definitely on the list.   Isn’t it so pretty!  I think so far I’ve got half a dozen dress patterns that I’m simply itching to sew.  I’m sure I can push it to seven to make a whole weeks worth.

So I just wanted to say a very heartfelt thank you to my in-laws and to Andrea for their kindness and generosity.  I’m one very happy seamstress.
