For her birthday, we bought Miss Button a pack of bulky yarn, as she’d said she wanted to learn to knit.
I’m fairly sure I don’t need to tell you what happened to that yarn…..
Yep, I knitted it.
There are surprising few patterns out there for tweenagers that require bulky yarn.
Funny that!
But I came across this pattern for a shrug and set to.
It’s a lovely pattern and a quick and simple knit. I’ll admit it’s a tad roomy for Miss B at the moment, but that’s not a bad thing. She’ll get lots and lots of wear out of it. It’s a great throw-on for cooler days that don’t yet need a coat. And, for a girl with a passion for all things flamingo, it’s just the perfect colour.
I altered the neckline so that there is a defined top and bottom to this shrug.
The yarn is squooshy and soft and reminds of that Minky fleece fabric.
Not something I’d want to wear, but a hot pink, squooshy, fleecy shrug is quite the thing when you’re 9 and 3/4s.

What a lovely shrug. It is such a nice colour and that pattern is lovely in a chunky knit. Do you think that you will knit it again? Miss Button has lovely taste in yarn. That is fab that she is wanting to learn to knit. My Mum taught Sprogzilla when she was about the same age and she still has a go when the notion takes her. I hope that it is a hobby that Button picks up as it is so fulfilling and fun. Xx
It is a lovely pattern and I’d like to knit it again in something not quite so loud. That says, Miss B loves her loud colours so it probably wouldn’t go down very well! I’m trying so hard not to push the knitting and sewing on her. We also have fabric for a top that she wanted to make thats been waiting 4 months! Sigh!
Gorgeous – and a not unexpected result. My DD decided to learn to knit at about that age. She’s 34 now and no nearer a result despite many efforts from myself and others. I hope you have more luck!
I think she’s going to be the same. The wee boy, on the other hand, spent yesterday carefully embroidering initials on felt for a blanket for his bear.
