My love affair with Amy Herzog’s CustomFit continues. Although today was a tad too warm for photographing cardigans, I really wanted to grab some snaps so I could share this with you.
The pattern is Amy Herzog’s Harbour Island knit in Patons Diploma Gold DK in the Navy colour-way.
I absolutely love this cardigan. I cannot tell you how much. It’s the perfect cardi for throwing on with a pair of jeans to do the school run when it’s too cold for just a t-shirt and too warm for a jacket.
And once again it fits perfectly at the bust and shoulders so even when unbuttoned it doesn’t slip off.
Fastened you can see how brilliantly it fits. To be fair the sleeves could be a little tighter but that’s because I opted for the relaxed fit option and a snugger sleeve is a personal preference. I don’t notice it when I’m wearing it…I only notice how comfy I am!
I like the 2×2 rib and the Vandyke Check Pattern Stitch on the cuffs and hem. Both are really easy to do. Both of them were frogged back time and again because I didn’t pay attention!
Why is it that the easiest stitch patterns are the ones that give me the most grief?
Needless to say this has been worn time and again since I finished it a couple of weeks ago (again with the wonderful seaming assistance of my friend Liz. I swear she employs pixies to help her. Her seams are a thing of beauty.)
I would absolutely recommend this pattern, and of course, CustomFit. I was thinking of casting another of these on in a different colour, but then, when digging out the links for this post I saw Drumlin, which is just about The Perfect Cardigan as far as I’m concerned.
I can see me knitting this in 4-ply/fingering in All. The. Colours. So I’d better get cracking with the socks and cardigan for the Mr/cardigan for Button that are already in the queue and then I can get this on the needles for myself!

You’re right, it’s a perfect fit, cardigans can easily turn out shapeless and be disappointing.
Amy is such a good teacher, I’m too impatient with knitting but have flirted with learning continental, I yearn to make socks two at a time on circular needles. I am in awe of your sock making.
I bought some lovely yarn about 18 months ago to make Carol Feller’s Ravi but couldn’t start it until I finished the Miete I started for my daughter, those instructions drove me insane, and it’s still unfinished. I learned to understand patterns by reading them for my mother and am used to traditional English style pattens, Carol Feller writes that way too so I had great hopes for that Ravi.
Sewing up can make or break a garment yours looks very professional, friends with skillz are great. Love your new hair btw.
Oh I’ve had my fair share of disappointingly shapeless cardigans. That’s why I’m loving CustomFit at the moment. I’m time poor and having knit two cardigans now, both a huge success, I’m confident that I can plug in the details I want and print off a pattern that will work without me having to fiddle with it. One day I’ll get to the point where I can work the maths myself…today isn’t that day.
Thank you for the kind words about my socks. I knit them the old fashioned way on double pointed needles. Again it’s about not having the time to learn a new technique with the hubby’s eagle eye on me yearning for a new pair. It’s also super portable this way so I can stick a sock in my bag and I’m never bored if I get delayed somewhere.
American and English patterns are very different beasts indeed, but I heartily recommend sticking with it. Knitting is my craft for the evenings when I want to be in the same room as hubby.
And thanks re the hair. It’s been like this a while now and I’m still not entirely used to it!
PS…you should really cast on the Ravi now…it looks gorgeous. The Miete can wait until the mood strikes! 😉

CustomFit is awesome…and there’s plenty to keep me going until I’ve got space to really have a go at working out the pattern for myself.

I did colour my hair! And thank you. It’s been part of a cunning plan to bring the colour down until I can grow out my now natural colour of grey. :-O
Keeping up the brunette was becoming ridiculous and as all the cool kids have grey hair now I thought I could slip it under the wire and pretend it’s a fashion statement! 😉

This was knitted on 4mm. I did swatch on 3.5mm, 4mm and 4.5mm just to be sure that I was happy with the fabric, even though 4mm is the recommended needle for the yarn. Turns out they were right!
