Best laid plans and all that!

January 10, 2022

I had an inclination to write a sort of “line in the sand” post with the hope that the coming year would be more….amenable…than the past two. Summer is just starting to study “Of Mice and Men” and the quote which inspired it seems so apposite for the last couple of years:

The best laid plans o’ mice and men

gang aft agley*

and leave us nought but grief and pain

for promised joy!

Robert Burns – “To a Mouse” – 1786. *often go wrong

Never a truer word spoken. It has been such a time of grief, and pain, stress and worry. Many have lost loved ones, and those who haven’t have lost time with their people.

We’re into the second week of January 2022 and ‘plus ça change’!**.

Frenchic Stamps and Transfers Workshop

March 26, 2020

It’s strange days, my lovelies. I hope you’re all staying in if you can and staying safe regardless.

We are on lockdown here Chez Jones. Dave is working at home. The kids have online schoolwork. We’re not doing masses of it, with school’s blessing, but we have what we need. They also have enough Lego to build a nuclear bunker, books to stock a small shop and are showing an interest in learning calligraphy.

I think you can say we’re going to be fine. We have much to be grateful for.

Although I don’t mind admitting that I’m equal parts heartbroken and humbled by humanity at the moment. There has been a definite split in the behaviour of people up to this point. I’m not on the side of the self-centred hoarders of pasta and loo rolls.

Thankfully, before all this malarky started, I was able to attend my second furniture painting workshop. For this one we were looking at layering stamps and transfers.

We arrived to find that the store owner, Amanda, had prepared some colour blended boards for us. Therefore, our first task was the fun one of choosing our stamps.

Frenchic Furniture Painting Workshop

March 7, 2020

Before we get to chatting about the Frenchic workshop, I just wanted to share more pics of my gorgeous boy. Yesterday I sewed a waistcoat and bowtie for Dylan to wear for WW2 Evacuation Day at school.

Blindz for boyz – FO 7/2010

March 28, 2010

The boy’s room has been looking more than a little Spartan of late.

This week Mr S put the cot bed and chest of drawers into the room.  We won’t mention the Mystery of the Missing Cot Bolts.

Today I’ve ordered the mattress and bed linen. And hung a blind:

There is a toning pair of curtains to be made (the last pair for the house…huzzah!), but until I find a pole that matches the furniture, they are on hold.  I can’t say I’m sorry not to be sewing them at the moment.  I’m beyond bored of making window treatments.

The fabric is from John Lewis (of course) and I love its cheerfulness. However I never cease to be amazed at the difference 1.5 m of fabric and a little stitching can make to a room.

Welcome

Image of a woman in her fifties taken from the shoulders up. She has grey shoulder length hair, brown eyes and a soft smile.

Hi there,
I'm Evie and I knit, stitch, spin and sew.
With varying degrees of success!
But always with my family around me in our little town in the North of England.
Grab a brew and stay a while.
