I promised you a look-see at the yarn I got for Christmas, and as we’ve had a wee bit of sunshine today, I could take photos to share, so here we go.
The first of the 3 kits is the Breiwick hat by Ella Gordon from Kate Davies’ book Milarrochy Heids.
I absolutely LOVE Kate Davies’ work. I may have said it before. I admire her tenacity in regaining her health after a devastating stroke, I wonder at her brilliance in designing patterns and yarn, and I’m faintly envious of her lovely lifestyle in Scotland.
This book doesn’t deviate from her winning formula. Wearable hats, with amazing design, all in this lovely yarn. This time it’s a collaborative effort from some stellar designers, and I think there may only be one pattern in the whole book thats not quite to my taste. Not bad going.
Thankfully my lovely children (with a tiny bit of help from Daddy) know all about this and bought me a yarn kit for Christmas.
I’ll be honest that I’m saving this yarn until I’ve finished a few more utilitarian knits. This is a slow project to be savoured.
As is the second of the Kate Davies yarn kits (they bought me one each for Christmas – I think Daddy also paid!)
This time the Featherheid hat designed by Felicity Ford.
This Milarrochy Tweed is a feast for the eyes. The colours are so reminicent of the nature of Scotland, they transport you. There is sky and stone, stream and cloud, heather and moss, wood and leaves. All of the Scottish land and loch in the palm of your hand.
There is texture, and nubs, and speckles. I think it will be a joy to knit.
The final kit is courtesy of my lovely in-laws and a complete departure from complex colourwork and cosy chapeaux!
I’ve been longing for a loose, lightweight, cotton tape sweater for quite some time now. The sort of thing you can take with you to the beach on a hot sunny day for if there’s a chill towards sundown. A sweater that will throw on over shorts, or a cotton dress, or jeans on cooler days, just for that extra light layer.
The Wool and the Gang Sunny Tunic fits the bill perfectly. It’s a very casual sweater but just the ticket for what I need.
And this glorious ice blue has my name written all over it.
So that’s my Christmas haul. 3 beautiful knits at each end of the complexity spectrum, but each is a perfect addition to my hand made wardrobe.

Lovely hats – but that ribbon tunic is divine! It will be so useful once you’ve made it Evie. Weren’t you a lucky person. You must have been very good last year ?

I don’t know about that, I think I just blagged it! 😉 But I was lucky and I’m so pleased.
