I think I’ve started something

April 26, 2011

Following Mr S’s birthday trip to Bentham Pottery there has been a lot of scouting on eBay for a second hand potter’s wheel and kiln. (Obviously he’s been doing that.  I’m far too busy hunting down Crown Stockholm and Poole pottery, and drooling over vintage sewing machines that I have absolutely no room for.)

He’s even threatened to clear all the junk from the garage to make room for said wheel and kiln.

But it all hinged on today.

Because today he spent the whole day having one-to-one tuition with Lee at Bentham.

He threw 45 pots.

He’s bringing these 4 home when they’ve been fired (‘scuse fuzzy iPhone photos)He seems to have a real knack for this.

I’d happily pay good money for any of those in a shop.   I know I’m biased but I do think these are pretty darned amazing…even more so when you realise that he’s been doing this for less than 10 hours.

Smarty pants!

(All the lovely ones lurking in the background are his too, but he had to choose 4.   I feel sad for the ones left behind.  I’d have found them jolly good homes.)

So, I’ve a feeling I’m going to become a pottery widow.

With a very tidy garage!

Shame *wink*

Can you see her yet?

Hurray!!! She's here!!!

Oooh I'd love to be playing with that remote control...but must. get. more. eggs!

I'm hiding under my hat...they won't see me eat this egg!

Hey, Auntie Alice...where were you? You missed the Easter Bunny!

I hope your Easter was as fun packed as ours.

And that you are as blessed with your friends as we are.  Thanks, Alice.

Mother’s day bag – FO 8/11

April 13, 2011

You’ll remember that Ma and I were going to The Patchwork Chicks for a bag making day for Mother’s Day.

Well, it was fabulous.

Despite Button’s best attempts to stop me getting out of the door…you know, screaming, shouting, stamping feet, the usual toddler delaying tactics…we still managed to get to Barrowford in time for tea and a very tasty bacon sandwich at the little cafe across the road, the name of which escapes me.At the appointed hour we liberated machines and sewing supplies from the car and headed on in.

There were four of us in total and we all got on famously from the get go.

First we cut out little house shapes and a base from fabric and interliningstitched them togetherthen we lined them, topstitched them, et voila!Of course, before you add cord they also make splendid hats

Sorry Ma!

But when you do get the cord in, then they are delightful project bags:And as this is the first quilty type project I’ve ever completed, and also the first bag, I’m rather pleased with the result.

Goodbye Charlie

April 4, 2011

Last night we lost our beloved Charlie.

He has been living at Aunty Christian’s Home for Retired Furballs since the wedding, and having a high old time of it.  There have been gentle walks, sleeping on sofas, long chats with his comrade-in-arms Nino, and treats aplenty.  It’s been the perfect spot for an elderly gentleman to spend his time without the constant boisterous attentions of our two Chaos Monsters.

He loved them all dearly and we can never repay her for the love and kindness she showed him over the last few months.

On Thursday afternoon we received a call saying he was having difficulty with his legs and kept collapsing.  Something was obviously very wrong.  A trip to the vet confirmed this, and whilst she had her suspicions about the cause, the only way to really find out what the problem was would be to submit him to surgery that he probably wouldn’t survive, and if he did would mean a long and painful recovery, with no guarantees that the surgery would actually be successful.

Not something any of us believed to be in his best interests.

So we tried steroids and painkillers, but last night he deteriorated rapidly and we had to make the hard and terrible decision to let him go.

We are heartbroken.

He was the best dog.  Kind and generous and loving.  He adored children and didn’t bat an eyelid when they played motorbikes with his ears or tickled his toes.

He had a mischievous sense of humour and a boundless zest for life.He was partial to a meat and potato pie and never knowingly missed a curry supper.

He was adored by everyone who ever met him.

And all this despite being abandoned by his previous owners who beat him to within an inch of his life with a claw hammer.  But he never held a grudge about this.  Mr S rescued him and lovingly nursed him back to full health.  Charlie repaid him with a magnificent temperament, a loving heart and total devotion to us all.

Goodbye Charlie Bear.  We love you.

Sneak peak of our Mother’s Day treat

March 29, 2011

On Saturday I’m treating Ma to a day at a bag making workshop at The Patchwork Chicks in Barrowford. Obviously it would be rude of me to expect her to go on her own, so being the selfless individual I am, I’m sacrificing my day to go with her.

Hang on whilst I take my tongue out of my cheek!

We had homework to complete prior to the day.  3 stitcheries which will feature on the pockets of the bag.

A slightly squint-eyed owl

A squirly dragonfly

The fabric is from the Maison de Garance range by French General for Moda.I just love this colour palette.

I think we’re going to have a lovely day.  I’ll report back.

Jacket refashion – the last post – F/O 7/2011

March 29, 2011

It’s done.

It’s finally done.

I should have gone with a purchased pattern in the first place and saved myself some time, but I’m counting it as all part of the learning curve.   And apologies for the dark pictures.  It’s a very cloudy and gray day here but I simply couldn’t wait for the sun to return before I share this with you.

As you know the pattern used is the Chic Everyday Coat Pattern from Heidi and Finn on Etsy.  Obviously I’ve had to shorten the coat to make it fit on the fabric and I’ve straightened the A-line somewhat for the same reason.  I made the 3T size deliberately to make this too big so she’ll get extra wear out of it. To make it fit for this season I’ve shifted the buttons to make this Chinese inspired style.  I’ll just move the buttons across as she grows into it.  We’ll get lots of wear out of this beautiful coat, which I’m very happy about.

I utilised the pockets of the original jacket, much to Button’s delight.

She’s so pleased that I’ve made her a coat she insisted she wore it to visit Grandma this morning so she could show it off. Makes it all worthwhile.  I’ve a feeling this won’t be the last of these I make, but next time I’ll make the size smaller. I also think there’ll be plenty of Heidi and Finn patterns in our future too.  They are delightful.

New in blue – Made by Ma!

March 27, 2011

Button has a new cardigan, the lucky girl.

The pattern is Vintage Snuggly DK Knits from Sirdar, view B.

And there’s even a matching bag! Just perfect for pennies and sunglasses (she’s her mother’s daughter, for sure).

What more does a girl need?

**********************************************

PS. Sorry about the crappy photos, but we were rushing to buy lining before the shop closed.  You know how that works, right?

PPS.  You’re right…it is a bit big on her…but the weather is starting to warm up here (finally) and this will see her through the whole year.

PPS. If you think this is big, wait till you see the refashioned jacket.  I had no intention of that not fitting her in the autumn!  And yes, it’s finished.  I sewed the buttons tonight.  It just needs a quick press and a photo shoot.

Going potty!

March 18, 2011

Mr S has long held a wish to try his hand a throwing pots.  Our local adult education college runs evening courses but because of his work schedule it’s not something he can commit to.  So, for his birthday I surprised him yesterday with an afternoon pottery course.  And I joined him!

We started off with tea and scrummy homemade cakes at the most charming little tea rooms on the way to the pottery.

Oh goodness.  The cakes are to die for! You can just see Mr S’s Bakewell Tart peeking out.  It didn’t last long, I can tell you!

Then we headed off to the pottery.  At this point he didn’t know what I had in store for him.  His nearest guess had been horse riding, but, as I pointed out to him, this would be a gift for me not him.  And I’m just not that mean.

As the sat nav turned him into the driveway to the pottery the penny dropped, his face lit up and I knew I’d got it right.

We started the day by making a tile of clay with a little picture on it, then cutting it up.  Quelle horreur!  The pieces were than turned into a pieced bowl with little balls and wiggles and swirls of clay.

Mine’s the wonky one on the right! Of course!

Mr S makes unwonky bowlsAnd after that they turned us loose on the wheel.

Demi Moore has nothing to worry about!

I am so rubbish at this!  I have no feel for the clay at all.

Mr S, however, is to the manner born.

And, with a smidge of help from the delightful Kathy

This is what he made:

He’s thrilled.

I’m proud.

He’s already talking about going back for a full day on his own next month to really get his teeth into this with a view to putting a wheel and and a kiln in the garage!

Result!

Happy birthday, handsome

March 16, 2011

My boys

Today is my husband’s birthday (I still get a kick out of calling him that!).

When I met him I was sooooo over men it wasn’t funny. (Long and dull and very clichéd story!) I didn’t believe that there were guys in the world who were kind and generous, warm and funny, honest and honourable.  And sexy.  Or if there were they’d all ready been snapped up by far more sensible girls than I.

And then there he was.  Everything a girl could hope for and about a bajillion things more.

Today is his birthday and I just want him (and everyone else for that matter) to know just what an amazing  husband, friend and father he is, how grateful I am every single second of the day that he chose to walk a path through life with me and the munchkins, and how much I hope today is just about as special as he is.

Happy birthday, my love.
