Lady in Blue – FO 16/2010

August 4, 2010

I can’t believe that with everything else going on this year I’ve managed to make 16 finished objects.  I know compared to some people out there it’s not a huge amount, but for me…well I’m rather pleased.

Particularly as number 16 is the bridesmaids dress for Alice-Who-Isn’t-A-Cat.It looks nothing on the hanger but even the muslin looked great on her, so I have hopes.  I’m most pleased that I got all the darts and seams to match up.

Next, curtains for The Boy’s bedroom (the final pair in the house) then it’s the home stretch for my outfit.  And 1 French paper and 2 French exams.  Eeek!

Birthday

August 3, 2010

Saturday was Ma Stitches-in-law’s birthday and we celebrated at home.

I made garlic foccacia, spaghetti tetrazzini and apple cinnamon cake.

A good time was had by all.  And I tried to get a good photo to share…I really did.  But everyone insisted on gurning to the camera

and you know as well as I do that being late posting about your mother-in-law-to-be’s birthday is one thing, posting a less than flattering photo is a completely different kettle of fish.

So, Happy Birthday Beth, and here’s a favourite photo of you that I’m sure you’ll be happy to share

One of Those Days

July 30, 2010

Yesterday was One of Those Days.

What elevated it to capital letter status?

: I burnt a batch of cookies

: I fell over a brick, bruising my toe

: I broke a laundry basket

: I turned one of Mr S’s t-shirts pink in the wash

: I spilt acetone on the new leather sofa, necessitating a visit from the lovely repair man and a bill

: I broke a teacup

One days like this the only sensible thing a girl do is abandon anything that requires any level of accuracy and sit on the sofa stitching.  So I left the big bridesmaids dress on the table and sewed the next stitchery for the Gardener’s Journal quilt:

Birds in the Tree

I’d finished this one the night before:

Dog House

5 down, 20 to go.  These are such fun to do.

Thankfully today is less eventful.  I’ve been in the workroom this morning and have sewn the bodice to the skirts on the big bridesmaid dress.  Also the invisible zip has gone in.  Phew!

And finally, today’s Extreme Toddler Sport is Naked Baby-gate Climbing.  For obvious reasons I’m not posting a picture, but, good grief, it’s like living with Edmund Hillary!!!

Geronimo!!!

July 29, 2010

As I came out of the shower this morning I heard an ominous thud from the playroom.

This is what I found. At least she had the good sense to install a crash mat!

Princess Bridesmaids – FO 14/2010 and 15/2010

July 27, 2010

No ROUS here, just two tiny bridesmaids dresses finished except for the hems.Just a sneak peek until November.  I’ll let the professional photographers do the real work!

To recap, this pattern is New Look 6881, the fabric is a poly satin from John Lewis and they’re lined with cotton for comfort.  I’ll hem them the week before the wedding to allow for little girls growing up.

On the table at the moment is a slightly larger dress (man, that girl has been working out!) dress for Alice-who-isn’t-a-cat.

Gelukkig voor het voetbal…

July 11, 2010

…which according to Google translate is Dutch for “thank goodness for football”.

Whilst I’d never admit it to his face, it’s rather lovely having a legitimate 90 minutes (assuming someone actually scores before half time or it could be more free time) in which to catch up with Google Reader, drink a glass of wine and drop a quick post here before bedtime.

It’s been a busy weekend with shopping, housework, silk dyeing, knitting swatches, embroidering, potty training, sitting in the park whilst Button and The Boy play with their two elder siblings, visiting Ma and admiring the quilt she’s currently making for Button (don’t even think I won’t blog about it when it’s finished), planning the mayhem that is the coming week, ordering timber for the deck, and fixing telephone wires that have been loosened in the chaos that ensued when the boy knocked a vase of peonies to the floor, so a little bit of quiet is a precious thing.

Although, on a completely random train of thought, when I lived alone the silence wasn’t as rich as it is now, with it’s faint undertones of sleeping babes and footie mad fiancé.  I love this silence.

Anyway, enough of that.  Whilst I’m free, free I say, I thought I’d show you the stitcheries I’ve done so far for the Gardener’s Journal Quilt.

Annual Garden Show
Potting Plants
Bird Bath

3 down, 22 to go!  I know it’s a teeny bit twee but I love it.  It makes me smile and all the little ladies remind me of people I know, although I’m not telling you who, even under torture!

The other strange thing is that I’ve always been an end results kinda girl, rather than a process kinda girl, but with this I’m so enjoying the process the end result really doesn’t figure.  I’ve also found this with the bridesmaids dresses.  I’m really focussing on making them well rather than just getting them made.

And it’s a lot more fun.

Let sleeping babes lie

July 2, 2010

Today the babies were playing in their room.  As usual they were noisy and boisterous, stripping cushions off the sofa and tipping toys all over the room. Pretty much standard practice for small children.

Suddenly I realised that all was quiet.

Most peculiar.

Here’s the reason why:Asleep where they stopped.

Too cute!

Another Chloe – FO 13/2010

June 25, 2010

I had planned for this to be a quick post with a quick snap as this is the third Chloë I’ve knitted for Button…this time in Debbie Bliss Eco, which is a delight to knit with.  Will I ever tire of this pattern.  It’s almost too cute. But there is little else for me to say about it.

But, as I was sewing in the ends and crocheting the little tie strings, something else occurred to me.

Button and The Boy were both asleep in bed.  Mr S and I were watching a film with a glass of wine to hand.  Just a perfectly ordinary evening Chez Stitches.

Until I realised that I was the umpteenth woman in our family to be replicating this scenario in some shape or form.

Ma Stitches knits, sews clothes, quilts and embroiders.  She’s even been known to crochet on occasion.  My maternal grandmother was a whiz with all needles. Even as an elderly woman, with almost no sight, she crocheted by touch alone. That’s three generations to start with.

Three generations of women sat of an evening creating a tiny garment with care and love for the small person sleeping above their heads.

For my mother it was a financial necessity.  For me it’s about creating something a little different.  Either way the same amount of time, effort, skill and love goes into the garment.

I remember some of the amazing creations that Ma came up with.  Some of them hysterical on reflection (the big fluffy snowman sweater that I know she sat up into the small hours of Christmas morning to finish for me).  Fabulous horse’s heads on long, warm sweaters to wear with jodhpurs and boots on a cold winters morning at the riding stables.

As the years past the patterns became more elaborate and intricate, and yet still the traditional birthday or Christmas sweater awaited me under the tree.

So, as I pinned the little Chloë out to block, I remembered these sweaters and the effort that had gone into them (Ma worked more than one job…she didn’t have the luxury of being a stay at home mother as I do).  I remembered the pleasure they gave me and the pride I took in them.  And I realised that my small efforts in creativity join me to the women in my family, as well as to all the women in the community at large who knit and sew and create for their homes and their families and their selves.

I am proud of these connections.

Most of all I’m grateful to my mother and my grandmother for paving the way for me and laying the foundations of the skills I have today.  And as my niece begins to explore her creativity with a sewing machine and an embroidery needle, it seems I’m not the last woman in our family to tread this path.

Happy Father’s Day

June 20, 2010

Happy Father’s Day, my love.  It’s so wonderful to have our little  family complete this year.

Father’s Day is celebrated Chez Stitches with a lie-in for Daddy, breakfast in bed, gifts (a bottle of his favourite brandy for now with another item en route from the States) then we are joined by the parents for the obligatory (and Mr Stitches’ favourite) Devil’s Food Cake. The cake is decimated because although Pa isn’t with us Pa SIL kindly offered to eat his share of the cake.  What we’d do without him I do not know.

However.  It seems that I’ve read far too much of the Selfish Seamstress recently, because although it’s Father’s Day, I’ve taken a leaf out of her book and successfully managed to make today all about ME!

It’s my birthday on Tuesday (yay!) and I really wasn’t expecting presents from the family because I really, really, REALLY want a digital SLR and, when asked, told them all not to bother with a gift, but to please all save up for birthday and Christmas until there was a fund sufficient to buy me a second-hand entry-level camera.

Well, whaddya know!  They pulled a blinder!

My new baby!

For some time now Mr (Sneaky) S has been sat of an evening messing with his phone and when questioned has reliably informed me he was mooching round on eBay.

This is the fruits of his labours.  Technically secondhand.  Actually brand spanking new apart from about 10 photos that it took for its previous owner to work out he hadn’t got a clue and tootle off to buy something simpler.

His loss.  My gain.  I’m a VERY HAPPY BUNNY, so thank you family.  I’m also very grateful.

Now…I have a manual to read and pictures to take.

Have a lovely Sunday.
