Let sleeping babes lie

July 2, 2010

Today the babies were playing in their room.  As usual they were noisy and boisterous, stripping cushions off the sofa and tipping toys all over the room. Pretty much standard practice for small children.

Suddenly I realised that all was quiet.

Most peculiar.

Here’s the reason why:Asleep where they stopped.

Too cute!

Another Chloe – FO 13/2010

June 25, 2010

I had planned for this to be a quick post with a quick snap as this is the third Chloë I’ve knitted for Button…this time in Debbie Bliss Eco, which is a delight to knit with.  Will I ever tire of this pattern.  It’s almost too cute. But there is little else for me to say about it.

But, as I was sewing in the ends and crocheting the little tie strings, something else occurred to me.

Button and The Boy were both asleep in bed.  Mr S and I were watching a film with a glass of wine to hand.  Just a perfectly ordinary evening Chez Stitches.

Until I realised that I was the umpteenth woman in our family to be replicating this scenario in some shape or form.

Ma Stitches knits, sews clothes, quilts and embroiders.  She’s even been known to crochet on occasion.  My maternal grandmother was a whiz with all needles. Even as an elderly woman, with almost no sight, she crocheted by touch alone. That’s three generations to start with.

Three generations of women sat of an evening creating a tiny garment with care and love for the small person sleeping above their heads.

For my mother it was a financial necessity.  For me it’s about creating something a little different.  Either way the same amount of time, effort, skill and love goes into the garment.

I remember some of the amazing creations that Ma came up with.  Some of them hysterical on reflection (the big fluffy snowman sweater that I know she sat up into the small hours of Christmas morning to finish for me).  Fabulous horse’s heads on long, warm sweaters to wear with jodhpurs and boots on a cold winters morning at the riding stables.

As the years past the patterns became more elaborate and intricate, and yet still the traditional birthday or Christmas sweater awaited me under the tree.

So, as I pinned the little Chloë out to block, I remembered these sweaters and the effort that had gone into them (Ma worked more than one job…she didn’t have the luxury of being a stay at home mother as I do).  I remembered the pleasure they gave me and the pride I took in them.  And I realised that my small efforts in creativity join me to the women in my family, as well as to all the women in the community at large who knit and sew and create for their homes and their families and their selves.

I am proud of these connections.

Most of all I’m grateful to my mother and my grandmother for paving the way for me and laying the foundations of the skills I have today.  And as my niece begins to explore her creativity with a sewing machine and an embroidery needle, it seems I’m not the last woman in our family to tread this path.

Happy Father’s Day

June 20, 2010

Happy Father’s Day, my love.  It’s so wonderful to have our little  family complete this year.

Father’s Day is celebrated Chez Stitches with a lie-in for Daddy, breakfast in bed, gifts (a bottle of his favourite brandy for now with another item en route from the States) then we are joined by the parents for the obligatory (and Mr Stitches’ favourite) Devil’s Food Cake. The cake is decimated because although Pa isn’t with us Pa SIL kindly offered to eat his share of the cake.  What we’d do without him I do not know.

However.  It seems that I’ve read far too much of the Selfish Seamstress recently, because although it’s Father’s Day, I’ve taken a leaf out of her book and successfully managed to make today all about ME!

It’s my birthday on Tuesday (yay!) and I really wasn’t expecting presents from the family because I really, really, REALLY want a digital SLR and, when asked, told them all not to bother with a gift, but to please all save up for birthday and Christmas until there was a fund sufficient to buy me a second-hand entry-level camera.

Well, whaddya know!  They pulled a blinder!

My new baby!

For some time now Mr (Sneaky) S has been sat of an evening messing with his phone and when questioned has reliably informed me he was mooching round on eBay.

This is the fruits of his labours.  Technically secondhand.  Actually brand spanking new apart from about 10 photos that it took for its previous owner to work out he hadn’t got a clue and tootle off to buy something simpler.

His loss.  My gain.  I’m a VERY HAPPY BUNNY, so thank you family.  I’m also very grateful.

Now…I have a manual to read and pictures to take.

Have a lovely Sunday.

June 15, 2010

Liz Abinante’s Traveling Woman is complete and I’m thrilled with it.

Here’s some of the detail. It’s just scrumptious and a lovely pattern to knit.

Next up, yet another Chloë cardigan for Button, this time in red Debbie Bliss Eco.  AND I’ve made the toiles for the tiny bridesmaids dresses.  This afternoon I’m having a bash at dying silk for Plan A bridesmaids dresses.

Wish me luck!

On Thursday we took another step towards the end of our journey.

Button’s Adoption Day Ceremony was held in front of the Judge.

Followed by lunch at one of our local Gasto Pubs where we raised a glass to Button finally being officially oursGifts were gladly openedAnd a good time was had by allHopefully it won’t be too long before we do it all again for The Boy!

Wellie warmers – FO 9/2010

May 16, 2010

Don’t tell Button I let her Daddy put his feet on the table.  She’d be extremely disgruntled!  Anyway…back to the socks.

You’ll recall the pattern is from The Knitting Man(ual) and the yarn is Superba Print.

All in all, I’m pleased with these socks other than they are a little loose around the foot, even though I knit them to the gauge in the pattern..  If I was making these again, and I may use the pattern with a different stitch, I’d use a size smaller needle to get a slightly tighter gauge.

That said, Mr S is pleased with them and feels they are the perfect sock for wellies and walking boots, so I’m pleased too.

Next!!!

Remembrance

May 6, 2010

This time last year my Dad was still with us and we hadn’t even met Button.   By 8pm in the evening the landscape of our world had change irrevocably.

It really doesn’t seem like a year.

But today the apple tree my dear friends bought me in celebration of Button and remembrance of Pa blossoms to remind me that the raw edge of the pain of loss fades but the happy memories stay fresh and vivid.

And though we still miss Pa each and every day, we  are blessed to have Button and The Boy to help us through.

Me and Miss Jones

April 30, 2010

Well, the broadband is down Chez Stitches so this is a quick post from the iPhone.

Today Button’s adoption was approved. Although she’s been ours in our hearts since the first day we met (which is a year ago next Thursday), today the courts agreed with us.

We are overjoyed.

One down, one to go!!!

Leftovers

April 29, 2010

When I bought the yarn for Mr Stitches’ Snowflake Jacket I bought waaaaaaaay too much of it. I can almost hear Mr S snorting “no surprise there, then!”.

So what’s a girl to do?  Ma Stitches and her lightning fast needles to the rescue, and two cute knits for Button and The Boy:

Just how cheeky is that little face????
My mop haired poppet

The Boy’s sweater is Gavyn by Amanda Blackford. Button’s is Eyelet Yoke Cardigan by Sarah Hoadley.  Both are available as free downloads on Ravelry.  Aren’t people just so generous with their talents.  Thank you to both ladies for sharing these patterns.

And there’s still enough of the grey left for another Gavyn, which shall soon be winging its way to my nephew, Jacob. Just in perfect time for the British summertime!  Today’s Spring is overcast, cold and wet.  Just right for new knits.

Thanks Ma.

The good, the bad and the ugly

April 27, 2010

The good:

::sneaking out for a swim today whilst the wee beasties were visiting grandparents

::making bread from the recipe by Richard Bertinet in his book “Dough”.  Seriously.  Go buy it now!  It’s amazing.

::It’s sunny.  In Lancashire.  Crazy but true.

::We start work on the garden this weekend.  The landscaping chappie comes in 6 weeks.

::The Boy shouting “Mama, Dada” at the top of his not inconsiderable voice.

::Button climbing on my lap just before bed just to tell me “I love you, Mummy”.

::Button telling me I have pretty hair.  Aaaaah, the innocence of children.

:: Mr S giving me a Sunday lie-in until 10am.  Bliss.

::Escaping for supper on Saturday to celebrate Himmelbjerget’s birthday and eating the most amazing food in the most wonderful company.

::Coffee and cake and sand pits and climbing frames at Lara Croft/Indiana Jones’ on Sunday.  Button learned to climb.  I never want her to lose the feeling of absolute joy in her achievements that she felt.

::The socks for Mr S are so nearly finished I can taste it!

The bad:

::Button deciding a new brother is the perfect segue into the terrible twos.  Who knew she’d be so good at it?

::The Boy deciding that 5.45am is the perfect time to get up.  Every day.  Bleugh!

::I’m too tired and too busy to sew.  Since my last post all I’ve managed to do is buy lining fabric (we’ll not mention the jersey I also bought for a top. Sssssssh!), wash and press the fabric, and draft a pattern for an a-line skirt.  Good grief.

::Still not studying.  Supposedly I’m working on an assignment tonight, but here I am, chatting to you.  Ooops!

The ugly:

::Hmmmmm. Nothing to tell.  What can I say…life is good.
